| HAPPY FATHER'S DAY! |
Steaking his claim: Mr. B hears that there are changes in the large, planned re-development at University and River Run, but one thing that won't change: Great food and attentive service from Ozzie and the other Cardinals at Silver Fox Steakhouse. They never stop short of making your visit a total flip. And when Oz heard we were doing a food-only week, he wanted to be first in line with a wizard of an offer...a complete meal for two, excluding tip and gratuity.
Modern meals: Looking for something a little more dainty? Quaint, quiet, fit for a queen? How about a wonderful lunch for two overlooking the tranquil waters at Café Modern within the Modern Art Museum? Chef Dena will regale you with her elegant flavors and artistic presentations while Mr. B searches out a job as a food critic. Since it is lunch and you're expected back to work, we can't include liquor (or your tip) in this offer.
Smokin'! It's almost Father's Day, and nobody made a better ribeye than dear ol' Pop. And though he may not be your Pop, Perry Tong is THE Pop's in Pop's Safari Bar and cigar hangout, and he has a white tablecloth restaurant to boot. Here's to a ribeye dinner for two, including salad and dessert, but not the tip. You might try a weekend night and hang around for a cigar and listen to live music.

Karen Anisman, Associate Director for Development and Community Outreach at TCU, and Diane Johnson, Details by Design, inspect the texture of suggested travel clothing after learning how to travel light and smart for business and pleasure during the June 4 Small Business Council's Minding your Business at the Residence Inn Marriott.

Roses are red, food is free: OK, so it's not historic because it just opened in March, but it is part of the Historic Camp Bowie Mercantile. The Rose Garden Tea Room is nestled inside and it's already a fave spot for Mr. B when he wants to shop and eat, or eat and shop. Or eat and eat while watching the ex-Ms. B shop with her new house-husband. You, too, could have an enjoyable afternoon if you win this $25 gift certificate for tea for two.
Big-eaters wanted: Ricki Epstein, Affairs to Cater(er) to die for, has just opened Zorro's, an all-you-can-eat buffet at Seminary and I-35. The brisket and the bread pudding are to die for, too. Can't wait for a future Newz-E-Letter giveaway to see how much dining damage the TCU football team can do. You'll want a spot at that table. Speaking of TCU sportsmen, former Ranch Radio-er Traci Tighe will be doing media stuff for the athletics program.

100 bottles of beer...Distributing more than 150 brands of beer, including Miller, Heineken, Shiner and Guiness, the Craine family's Miller Distributing of Fort Worth has outgrown its Pharr Street distribution complex and will move to Blue Mound Road by Fall 2009. The three brothers and three sons are so good they were one of only five winners -- and the first in Texas -- of a Miller High Life national award for quality service.

Saving the environment: The monthly Chamberletter, inserted in the Star-Telegram or mailed to residents, will become a one-pager in the Metro section of the Star-Telegram the last week of each month, and will be emailed to Chamber members. Look for it June 26th.
Honk at someone who cares: Are you angry and don't want to sit through traffic tie-ups any longer? Are you missing time with family? Are you missing on-time deliveries? Here's your chance to sound off. The Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition (TRTC) has an on-line petition and you can vent your frustrations over increasing drive times. Keep that finger to yourself, though. Click here to link to the petition. TRTC will share the results with legislators.

A little help from our friends: Chamber Am-Bass-Adores will be doing "tied-in" ribbon cuttings this week. Friday, they're at Blu Glo Home Media Systems at Montgomery Plaza, where Bret Phillips has the latest and greatest in media technology. Then, Tuesday, they go to Little Angels Home Learning Center at 8221 Ederville Road, where the little kiddoes will show them how to actually work those technological marvels, including the remotes. Ribbon cutting photos can be viewed at our website.
Berry, Berry popular: Folks -nearly 300 -- flocked to the recent North Area Council luncheon to hear Hillwood President Mike Berry's update on the AllianceTexas development, which includes more than 170 companies and $3.1 billion in development. When asked about the competition from the emerging South Dallas Intermodal Center, Berry said, "It has taken Alliance 18 years to build the infrastructure and develop 50% of our available land. It will take them some time. I just hope they don't recruit potential tenants away from Alliance or re-directed badly needed funding for roads and infrastructure."
Kudos: When Mr. B thinks railroads, he thinks Monopoly, not technology. But BNSF Railway is modernizing the Reading and B&O forever. BNSF is a 2008 Computerworld Honors Program winner for its Locomotive Engineer Fuel MVP Program.
Days-ed and confused: Ekua Anyanful, a financial planner, says her name means "someone born on Wednesday" though she was born on Friday. A-lass, she was named after her grandmother, who was born on Wednesday, but is named Tuesday. (OK, that last part is not true.)
C U later: Bruce Carlson has overcome great odds -including his first name -- and grown CMA Architecture from 25 employees in 2001 to more than 50 employees. So big, in fact, CMA is moving this month with remodel help from Innovative Developers, Inc. to 14,500 square feet of space at 1300 Summit Ave.
|
 |
On the move 2: Expanding Komatsu Architecture will move in July to the third floor of the Frost Bank building north of Vickery on Hulen. Architecture business must be awfully good.
Picky, picky: Welcome to Clara Mitcham, Chamber intern, harsh critic and newest hands-on editor of Newz-E-Letter. Says she is majoring in PR at Oklahoma, which is weird because fellow student and son NoBGood said the only major he was offered was Beer 101.
Shipping luggage? You might be tempted when they start charging for checked-in luggage. So said Kathryn Bryan of Kasal Image Consulting (she didn't consult with Mr. B about his image). It was one of her many tips when she spoke last week on traveling light and right. Some others:
- With accessories, prepare to wear clothing up to three times during a trip (hope you wash the underwear, though);
- Merino wool is the perfect fabric because it's light, repels moisture and doesn't cause body odor. Stay away from nylons and cottons;
- Wear your bulkiest shoes while you travel; pack two other pair;
- Don't travel with flashy or expensive jewelry;
- Baggage is overweight at 50-plus pounds for check-ins and 40-plus pounds for carry-ons.
- Buy a "packing envelope"; it's luggage for hang-ups that doesn't cause wrinkles and fits in a roll-on;
- There's a cool travel "vest" that has plenty of pockets for little things to wear onto the plane or as you tourist about.

Shipping successes: International sales manager Terry Locke says KFS Inc. was at 75 percent of its 2008 revenue budget by June 1. Europeans are buying and receiving more because of the weak dollar.
More international: Was anyone else stunned to read that 36 percent of American Airlines' flights are international?

Wasn't he in Love Story, too? Actor Tommy Lee Jones is back to his Coal Miner's Daughter days as he is featured in the Barnett Shale public education media program sponsored by Chesapeake Energy. With a few substitutions, he is the spokesman for Chesapeake's involvement in other shales, too.
Feeling Blue? Sunny Lowe has started Blue Jean Networks, which does technology stuff too difficult for Mr. B to grasp. Other new Chamber members are Blu Go Home Media Systems and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas.
